Formatting

Formatting your works cited page

  • Begin your works-cited list on a separate page at the end of your paper
  • Label the page Works Cited. No quotation marks. No italics. No bold or underline. Center the words
  • Double space the entire list
  • Use a hanging indent*
  • All citations end with a period
  • Organize your works-cited list alphabetically by the first element of the citation (author name or, if there is no author, title) (5.123-5.124)

Edited books

Editor, editors. Title of book. Publisher, Date.

Meyer, Michael, and D. Quentin Miller, editors. Literature to Go. 4th ed., Bedford/St. Martin’s, 2020.

  • When there are 2 names, only the first one is reversed; if there are 3 or more authors, reverse the first name and follow it with et al.
  • The edition follows the title, and is abbreviated "ed."

A story in an anthology or textbook

Author of Work. "Title of Work." Title of Book, edited by Editors, Edition, Volume, Publisher, Date, pp. X-X.

O'Connor, Flannery. "Revelation." Literature to Go, edited by Michael Meyer and D. Quentin Miller, 4th ed., Bedford/St. Martins, 2020, pp. 266-81.
