Introduction to Humanities: Research

What is a scholarly or academic source?

A scholarly or academic source is something that was created by an expert in the field. Another term for an academic source is a scholarly or peer-reviewed article. Watch the video below to find out more.

Limiting to scholarly articles

So, how do you find scholarly articles at ATC? By searching the library website.

The video tells you that if you want only peer reviewed or scholarly articles, to click the peer-reviewed box before you search. In GALILEO, click on "advanced search" and you'll see the box, which you click before you enter your search terms:

Galileo advanced search options. The second one is "peer reviewed"

However, in O.W.L., you search first and then choose the "Peer reviewed journals" facet on the left:

Shows the "refine my results" column on the left side of the screen with "peer reviewed journal" highlighted

Searching for information

Search O.W.L. or GALILEO. Your list of results will be large and include many types of resources (books, articles, etc.). You can limit them.

If you'd like to start smaller, try one of the databases listed on this guide's homepage  in the top resources box.

  • Search using keywords, not sentences
  • Choose strong keywords and be persistent
  • Put phrases "in quotations" so the words will be searched next to each other
